On May 3, 1999, his mother passed away from a heroin overdose at the age of 27. He attended kindergarten in Griffith, IN, before he and his grandparents moved to South Dakota in 1997–98. Both of his parents struggled with drug addiction, and Pfeiffer was raised by his grandparents, Tony and Sheila Pfeiffer.
Kyle Pfeiffer was born on Jin Munster, IN to mother Tina Pfeiffer, and father George Balac.
